Sedaris first read the essay on National Public Radio's Morning Edition on December 23, 1992. The piece was well received, and provided Sedaris with his first major break. Sedaris later published the essay in the collections Barrel Fever (1994) and Holidays on Ice (1997).

The NEW INNOVATIONS play-reading series gives us a chance to hear plays in an informal atmosphere and provide the community with the opportunity to be a part of our production process. Once a playwright has finished a play, a public reading is often the first step toward honing the piece with an eye toward making it ready for production. As part of our mission, ITW is committed to producing new works and material new to our region while providing our audiences the thrill of being the first to see a brand new play. However, we will also schedule classic plays from time to time as a way of honoring the great playwrights of the past and creating the opportunity to read plays that haven't been heard in our region in recent years while giving the community a "first look" at great work we may be considering for production.
NEW INNOVATIONS is an ongoing monthly series with a new reading on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. There is no admission charge and everyone is invited.
INNOVATION THEATRE WORKS is the first fully professional, Actor’s Equity contracted theatrical organization serving the Central Oregon region. Our goal is to produce a full season of great theatre, on a par with other regional theatres such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Seattle Rep or Portland Stage Company.
